    SM010:

    Hello everyone.

This looks like a “rea-Lego”, which is goog, because it shows the game-like situation on the site. Circumstances alter from corner to corner and this is why it is important to present a flexible strategy.

At this moment, we should ask ourselves:
    - Do we have it all here?
    - Do we have the enticing commercial street scape on Flegmade? Is it special?
    - Do we have relaxing open public space at the side of Flegmade?
    - Do we have semiprivate yards for the occupants on the area? Are those yards spacially well proportioned so that people really feel comfortable there and enjoy their freetime there?
    - Do we have urban interaction points where these two worlds (private and public meet? And are those points well established so that they feel natural and easy.
    - Are the parking and traffic problems solved?

In my mind I can see this all here.

However, I would like to see the next phase too. I would like to see the actual architecture on the site somewhere. I would like to see how some architect is going to make an interpretation of the “urban genetic code” that is shown here and how is she or he going to design a block or a quarter here as an entity. And what would be the continuation - the reaction of the next architect when the time becomes for her / him to show the skills and creative mind. Are we really getting fresh new architecture out as a result from our code?

You know that there is a giant distance from good urban layout to goor urban architecture. Goog architecture doesn’t come for free. And it is sad because good urbanistic solutions allways require quality architecture. Otherwise we will lose the whole point more or less.

What is the next step? Another competition for the design of buildings? Is it possible for the city to organize an competition for example for the construction companies where they have to present a project with architect? Then the jury will decide what project has the best quality and what project is the most compatible on the urban layout according the code. In my opinion the architectural competition is the only way here to set the level high enough in order to get quality architecture on the site.

At this stage it should be possible and quite easy to make a program for the competition. We all do know, what we want here, don’t we.

    Yours, Janne
